Is October a Good Time to Visit China?

I’m Baker Gu. October is one of the months I enjoy selling — cooler than summer, often clear in the north and east, and the light can be gorgeous for photography — but I never let clients ignore Golden Week. Getting the month wrong can mean queues at the Wall and sold-out trains; getting it right can mean crisp air and easier restaurant bookings.

Early October: National Day and Golden Week

The first week of October brings huge domestic travel. Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xi’an — the icons feel full. I tell people: if you must travel then, we book early, I tighten day order, and I avoid “lazy” midday starts at the busiest gates. If you can slide to mid- or late October, you usually get a calmer experience without giving up autumn weather.

Mid- and late October: why I like selling this window

After the holiday wave, queues shorten, restaurants are easier, and eastern China is still mild enough for full days outside. For my Discovery groups, that pacing matters — I do not want to rush a Wall day because every platform was packed at noon.

Regional snapshot: how I dress clients

• North (Beijing, Xi’an): Crisp days, cool nights — I say layers, windproof jacket, comfortable shoes with grip for Wall sections with steps.
• Yangtze Delta (Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou): Mild, sometimes drizzly — pack a light shell and a small umbrella; humidity is lower than summer.
• South: Often warmer than the north; still check typhoon season history if you combine with southern coast — less relevant for my October Jiangnan loops.

I still send everyone through my NZ entry checklist — visa-free does not mean “turn up empty-handed.” You need the same discipline on documents as for any long-haul trip.
