Everything a Kiwi needs to plan a China holiday in 2026 — visa-free entry, NZD pricing, which cities to include, how long to go, and what a guided tour costs from Auckland. Expert guide by CTS Tours NZ.
New Zealand ordinary passport holders can travel to China visa-free in 2026 for up to 30 days — no visa application required. China tour packages from Auckland (AKL) start from NZD $3,399 including return international flights. Most Kiwi travellers choose a 10–15 day itinerary covering two or three cities. CTS Tours has been running China holidays from New Zealand since 1928.

I'm Baker Gu, CTS Tours NZ's China travel specialist. Most weeks, someone sits across from me at our Auckland office and asks essentially the same question: "How do I actually plan a China holiday from New Zealand?" This is my complete answer for 2026.
The Visa Question (Solved)
The biggest thing that changed for NZ travellers in recent years is the visa. NZ ordinary passport holders can now enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days per visit — no embassy appointment, no visa fee, no waiting. The policy runs until 31 December 2026.
What you do need at the border:
- A valid NZ ordinary (blue) passport with at least 6 months remaining
- A return or onward ticket confirming you'll leave within 30 days
- Accommodation confirmation (hotel booking or a tour itinerary)
All CTS tour bookings come with documentation that covers these requirements automatically.
How Long Should You Go?
10 days: Two cities, comfortably paced. Good for first-timers who want the highlights without feeling rushed. Our 10-day "A Tale of Two Cities" (Beijing & Xi'an) and 10-day "Shanghai & Surroundings" both fit this window.
12–14 days: Two to three cities with more breathing room. You can add Guilin, Chengdu, or Yunnan to a Beijing/Shanghai base without feeling like you're on a treadmill.
15+ days: Multi-region journeys. Our Signature "Best of China" (Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Shanghai) runs 15 days and works for travellers who want depth.
Flight time from Auckland to Beijing or Shanghai is approximately 12–14 hours (direct or one stop via Hong Kong or Singapore depending on season). Factor this into your energy budget — it's not a short-haul trip.
Which Cities to Include
Beijing — the imperial capital. Mandatory for first-timers: the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, hutong laneways, and Peking duck. Minimum 3–4 nights.
Xi'an — ancient capital, home of the Terracotta Warriors. 45 minutes from Beijing by air or 5 hours by high-speed train. 2–3 nights is enough. The Muslim Quarter food market alone justifies the stop.
Shanghai — China's most cosmopolitan city. The Bund, Yu Garden, the French Concession, and day trips to water towns like Zhujiajiao. Works as an entry or exit point (direct flights from Auckland are sometimes available via alliance partners).
Chengdu — giant pandas and Sichuan cuisine. The panda base is genuinely extraordinary and worth the detour. Add Leshan Giant Buddha as a day trip. Best combined with a broader Sichuan or Yunnan route.
Guilin — the karst landscape that defines most people's mental image of China. Li River cruise to Yangshuo, bamboo rafting, and hill cycling. Best experienced April–October. Not ideal as a standalone — combine with Shanghai or Beijing.

How Much Does a China Holiday Package Cost?
| Collection | Style | Starting Price | Group Size |
|-----------|-------|---------------|-----------|
| Discovery | 3–4 star, great value | From NZD $3,399 | Up to 24 |
| Signature | 4–5 star, premium | From NZD $4,800 | Max 16 |
| Stopover | City break, 2–4 days | From NZD $1,200 | Flexible |
All prices are per person, twin share, including flights from Auckland. Contact our team for current pricing on specific departures — the October 2026 dates are already confirmed.
Our Signature collection runs a maximum of 16 passengers. Our Discovery tours cap at 24. Both are substantially smaller than the 40–50 person coaches operated by some competitors.
The practical difference: smaller groups move faster through attractions, get better table placement at restaurants locals actually use, and have a guide who is actually teaching rather than just marshalling.
Best Time to Go from New Zealand
October departures are our most popular, for good reason: autumn in China is spectacular. The Great Wall at Mutianyu in October has turning foliage; Beijing and Xi'an are crisp and clear; Guilin's karst peaks reflect in still water.
We run October 2026 departures for both Beijing & Xi'an and Shanghai & Surroundings. These depart in the first two weeks of October, before the end of Golden Week crowds.

Booking with CTS vs Online Booking Platforms
CTS Tours has operated from New Zealand since 1928. We are TAANZ-bonded (financial protection), Auckland-based, and we run our own ground operations in China through Asiascape Holidays — we're not reselling packages assembled overseas.
The practical advantage: when something changes in China (a closure, a logistics problem, a weather event), our team on the ground solves it directly. You're not waiting for an overseas call centre to relay information through a subcontractor chain.
For NZ travellers, we also quote everything in NZD. No currency conversion surprises.
