The Monorail That Runs Through a Residential Building
Liziba Station (李子坝站) is one of the most extraordinary pieces of urban infrastructure on earth. A working monorail station on Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2, it is built directly inside the 6th to 8th floors of a 19-storey residential and commercial tower in Yuzhong District. Trains pass through the building multiple times per hour. Residents live above and below the tracks. The building was co-constructed with the station simultaneously in 2004 — not retrofitted — as an engineering solution to Chongqing's mountainous terrain and extreme urban density.
The station has become one of China's most viral travel images, featured by BBC, CNN, National Geographic, and virtually every major travel publication. Low-noise rubber-tyred trains mean residents are minimally disturbed — the system works, and has worked continuously since it opened in June 2005.
For visitors, the experience works on two levels: watching from the dedicated street-level observation area as trains glide through the building above, and riding Line 2 through the station to experience it from inside the train. CTS Tours includes a Liziba visit on Day 1 of the Fire & Fuzz Chongqing and Chengdu tour.
What Makes Liziba Station Unique
Only station of its kind
The only rail transit station in the world built inside an occupied residential building.
Built together, not retrofitted
The station and building were co-constructed in 2004. The train route was planned first; the building designed around it.
Rubber-tyred trains
Chongqing's Line 2 uses rubber tyres instead of steel wheels, dramatically reducing noise and vibration for residents.
Mountain city engineering
Chongqing's extreme terrain — steep hills, limited flat land — forced creative infrastructure solutions. Liziba is the most famous result.
